This section describes how to add, edit, or remove metadata terms for Photo metadata. This includes Keywords, Locations, Inside/Outside, Events (not currently showing for public), Topics, Photographers, and People.
Metadata terms show:
- On the Photo Edit pages
- On the Single Photo pages (if metadata selected for Photo)
- On Archive pages for the term (these are created automatically as terms are added and linked to from the individual Photo pages). E.g., Exhibit Topics Archive
Adding metadata terms
- On the left WordPress Admin menu, click on the type of metadata you want to add (e.g., ‘Topics’)
- In the ‘Add New [Topic]’ form, fill out the Name of the metadata term
- If you want a specific url for the term, type one in the Slug field. Note: WordPress generates these automatically based on the title and they are editable after term creation.
- Select a Parent term, if necessary.
- If you want a description for the term, fill in Description field. If a description exists for a term, it will show on the Archive page for that term, under the title. (example of an archive page: Lincoln Barn )
- Click Add New [Topic] to save
Editing metadata terms
- On the left WordPress Admin menu, click on the type of metadata you want to edit (e.g., ‘Topics’)
- Using the Search bar, or page navigation, find the term you want to edit
- To edit only the Name or Slug

- Click ‘Quick Edit’ under the term
- Make edits
- Click Update [Topic]
To edit the Name, Slug, Parent term, or Description
- Click the title of the term or click ‘Edit’ under the term (shows on hover)
- Make edits
- Click Update
Remove metadata terms
Note: this is non-reversable! (although you can contact CARES to restore a prior day’s backup if things get really out of hand)
- On the left WordPress Admin menu, click on the type of metadata term you want to remove (e.g., ‘Topics’)
- Using the Search bar, or page navigation, find the term you want to remove
- Remove the term (2 ways)
Remove term from term list (1st way)
- Hover over the term and click ‘Delete’ (under the term), or:
Remove term from term page (2nd way)
- Click the title of the term
- From the term edit page, scroll to bottom and click ‘Delete’
